Go from this to
Made in photoshop CS2, don't see why it can't be transferable as there is no selective colouring or curves
1. Choose the picture you are going to work with and crop it to 100x100
2. Prepare it however you wish (ie sharpening, screening etc)

3. Duplicate the base
4. Add a new layer and fill it with black. Change the blending mode to color and leave the opacity at 100.

5. Merge together the colour layer and the duplicate layer. If you need to, adjust the contrast/brightness until you are satisfied
6. Select the eraser and choose a small soft edged brush. I usually start with a 9 then get smaller for the trickier parts.
7. Zoom in on the icon to make it easier to see what you are doing and begin erasing the areas where you wish the icon to be coloured.
8. when you have finished erasing, reduce the icon back down to 100%

9. Flatten the image
10. Add some text, brushes and border if you wish and you’re done!
